Here is for a specific application config. .
pop.gmail.com & outgoing is smtp.google.com make sure to also check the box next to 'This server requires a secure connection (SSL)' under 'Outgoing Mail (SMTP).'
Enter '465' in the 'Outgoing mail (SMTP):' field.
Check the box next to 'This server requires a secure connection (SSL)' under 'Incoming mail (POP3).' The port will change to 995.
*The order of 'Outgoing' and 'Incoming' mail server fields varies by version. Make sure you enter the correct information in each field.

If you are going to try and get your gmail via outlook or any mail client, you should note that you have to inable pop acsess in your account, dunno where coz i've never needed to do it.
Smuj, this could be why it won't let you connect.
At my bording school we have software that blocks sights based on the content, couple've weekends ago, i couldn't acsess my gmail, coz someone had emailed me some spam with loto in it, which are school blocks.

BEN.

You can use web2pop, from JMASoftware.
They have a 'support module' for gmail, and all you need do is specify localhost as the pop server in your mailer.
